WireGuard is an advanced security and privacy program that particularly uses state-of-the-art cryptography. Although, WireGuard claims to be more performant than OpenVPN as it is designed to run on embedded interfaces and super computers alike. Is WireGuard better than OpenVPN?

To give you an overview, OpenVPN offers a private networking service that employs VPN protocols to create and secure your connection just like this software solution. It has been, for the longest time, the industry’s gold standard since 2001. However, the game changed when Jason A. Donenfeld released WireGuard in 2019, which, with its good features, challenges the dominance of OpenVPN. 

However, Donenfeld didn't allow his project to fall short as it performs much faster compared to OpenVPN. In fact, it is operating at least 3x quicker. Not only that, it even consumes around 15% less data, handles network changes better but still grants the same level of security as OpenVPN. Most especially if you are a mobile user it presents a more reliable connection.

When it comes to ease of use, WireGuard also leads the race as easier to audit and has a smaller attack surface than OpenVPN. For the record, its aim is to be as effortless to configure and deploy as SSH wherein a VPN connection is made efficiently by exchanging simple public keys. The rest of the job will be transparently managed by this type of VPN protocol.

Under development nonetheless, efficiently works

Even though WireGuard is relatively fresh and younger in comparison with OpenVPN still it doesn't fall flat in performing its main task—creating a fast and safeguarded VPN tunnel. On top of that, this VPN protocol type is more suggested to be used by less tech-savvy users as it guides you and doesn't leave you alone to take matters into your own hands.
